Thomas Berry, author of "The Dream of the Earth" and other inspirational writings, died on Monday in Greensboro, North Carolina, at the age of 94. I had the opportunity to hear him speak at the 23rd Annual E. F. Schumacher Lecture in Great Barrington, MA, in 2003.
Berry's reverence for the Earth was truly inspiring. In his work, he promoted an ecumenical spirit that transcended any particular religious faith and evoked an awe for all Creation.
A memorial service will be held in September at the Cathedral of St John the Divine in New York City. Among those participating in this service will be musician Paul Winter and author
Brian Swimme, a physicist whose own books interpret and expand on Berry's theology.
