Thomas Berry, theologian and environmentalist, dies at age 94

Thomas Berry, author of "The Dream of the Earth" and other inspirational writings, died on Monday in Greensboro, North Carolina, at the age of 94. I had the opportunity to hear him speak at the 23rd Annual E. F. Schumacher Lecture in Great Barrington, MA, in 2003. Berry's reverence for the Earth was truly inspiring. In his work, he promoted an ecumenical spirit that transcended any particular religious faith and evoked an awe for all Creation. A memorial service will be held in September at th… Continue

From the Carbon Age to the Solar Age

Today Van Jones, an advisor to President Obama, had very encouraging things to say about the future of energy in this country. Speaking to students at Bentley College in Waltham, Jones said, "The good news is that we can beat this global recession and global warming at the same time. We can beat poverty and pollution at the same time... and you're the solution. You will be the generation of innovators, of entrepreneurs, of problem solvers, of people who throw away this old tired distinction betw… Continue

World War II Slogans Resonate Today

Renewable Energy for Your Home

Last week I attended a presentation on residential solar and wind power at the Franklin Public Library. The event was sponsored by the Franklin Area Climate Team (FACT). It was an informative evening and well attended. I learned that residential rooftop solar photovoltaic installations are now very affordable, due to a combination of rebates, state tax credits, and federal tax credits. I'm looking in to an installation on my own roof, if it meets the technical requirements. For utilities parti… Continue

Putting Local Food on Your Table - November 19

Putting food from local farms on the dinner table will be the focus of the next meeting of Citizens for a Sustainable Local Economy (CSLE). Farmers and consumers in some Massachusetts communities are now banding together to form cooperatives called CSAs. CSA stands for community-supported agriculture. In a CSA, consumers purchase shares in the anticipated harvest of a farmer over an entire growing season, which usually lasts about 20 weeks, from June to October. Shareholders pick up their produc… Continue

Report on May 14 Meeting

About 16 people attended the May 14 meeting at the Attleboro Public Library. Charlie began the meeting with a shortened version of the slide show he originally presented on April 16. That was followed by a discussion of the types of economic initiatives that might be attempted in this area. There was a lot of interest in starting a CSA (a cooperative in which members pay a farmer to provide them with locally-grown, organic produce over an entire growing season). There may be some land available… Continue
