Thomas Berry, author of "The Dream of the Earth" and other inspirational writings, died on Monday in Greensboro, North Carolina, at the age of 94. I had the opportunity to hear him speak at the 23rd Annual E. F. Schumacher Lecture in Great Barrington, MA, in 2003.
Berry's reverence for the Earth was truly inspiring. In his work, he promoted an ecumenical spirit that transcended any particular religious faith and evoked an awe for all Creation.
A memorial service will be held in September at th…

Today Van Jones, an advisor to President Obama, had very encouraging things to say about the future of energy in this country. Speaking to students at Bentley College in Waltham, Jones said, "The good news is that we can beat this global recession and global warming at the same time. We can beat poverty and pollution at the same time... and you're the solution. You will be the generation of innovators, of entrepreneurs, of problem solvers, of people who throw away this old tired distinction betw…

A new exhibit of vintage World War II government posters at the Attleboro Arts Museum sounds many themes that resonate today. During the war, the public was exhorted--and expected--to make sacrifices as part of the war effort. Resources were scarce and citizens…

Here's an interesting article about sustainable agriculture:
Spoiled: Organic and Local Is So 2008
"...we're going to need not only new methods for producing food, but a whole new set of assumptions about what sustainability really means."
"...you can shrink your footprint far more by changing what you eat, rather than where the food came from."
"...going meat- and dairyless one day a week is more…

Last week I attended a presentation on residential solar and wind power at the Franklin Public Library. The event was sponsored by the Franklin Area Climate Team (FACT).
It was an informative evening and well attended. I learned that residential rooftop solar photovoltaic installations are now very affordable, due to a combination of rebates, state tax credits, and federal tax credits. I'm looking in to an installation on my own roof, if it meets the technical requirements.
For utilities parti…

Putting food from local farms on the dinner table will be the focus of the next meeting of Citizens for a Sustainable Local Economy (CSLE). Farmers and consumers in some Massachusetts communities are now banding together to form cooperatives called CSAs. CSA stands for community-supported agriculture. In a CSA, consumers purchase shares in the anticipated harvest of a farmer over an entire growing season, which usually lasts about 20 weeks, from June to October. Shareholders pick up their produc…
