On Saturday, October 24, 2009 there will be a global day devoted to
Climate Action. The effort is being led nationally by
350.org. One of the founders of 350.org
is author and environmentalist
Bill McKibben.
Climate Action Day is timed to happen just before world leaders
convene in Copenhagen in December to decide what actions they can
agree on to address climate change. The first international treaty
on climate change, the Kyoto Protocol, was signed in 1997 and
expires in 2012. The United States never signed the Kyoto Protocol.
This time we hope the United States will play a leading role in the
negotiations.
To be effective, any climate action plan must bring the
concentration of carbon in our atmosphere back under 350 parts per
million. Right now it is at 387. The purpose of Climate Action Day
is:
1. To make everyone aware of the importance of the 350 target.
2. To ask our elected officials at every level of government to
commit to supporting action to prevent climate change.
An
Earth-Friendly Fair and Rally, sponsored by the
Attleboro Area Climate Action Coalition, will be held at Balfour
Riverwalk Park in downtown Attleboro on October 24, beginning at
1:00 pm.
.
This will be one of more than a thousand events being held around
the globe on Climate Action Day.
